North-West Province
The province of the North-West borders Botswana in the north, and is home to South Africa’s very first casino, Sun City. The Sun City complex also hosts golf tournaments and music concerts, and includes the spectacular Lost City hotel. Adjacent to Sun City is the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, which covers a surface area of approximately 135 000 hectares (335 000 acres). When the Reserve was demarcated, it included a number of farms and an extinct volcanic crater. The Reserve is a “Big Five” reserve, meaning that is contains the so-called “Big Five” wild animals. Despite its immense size, it is only the third-largest game reserve in South Africa. Close the Botswana border is the wonderful and perhaps lesser known Madikwe National Park, which offers walking safaris.
Politically and economically, the Province of the North-West is a lesser province of South Africa.
