South Africa offers a wide range of accommodation, from five star hotels to caravan parks, as well as a vast real estate market. Finding accommodation in South Africa shouldn’t be a problem. However, it’s how you go about looking for it that may make all the difference.
As a rule of thumb, it’s a good idea to contact an agent when you start looking, whether you are seeking rented accommodation or a property to purchase. A good agent should have an intimate knowledge of the area that you are looking to settle in, and should also be able to advise you on appropriate rents/prices and locations.
Of course, you can try to buy or rent on your own, and deal directly with the owner of the property, but this is a little harder, as you will have to conduct all negotiations yourself. If you want to do it this way, make sure that you do proper homework on the area you are looking in, so that you are not over-charged or misled as to the nature of the place. In fact, if you are trying to organise accommodation while you are still based in another country, you should almost certainly make use of a go-between who knows the South African landscape and can simplify the process for you.
It is difficult to give exact figures as to recommended property prices, because property prices in South Africa are subject to fluctuation, just like anywhere else. Typically, though, prices are higher in the urban centres, and on the coast, but depend strongly on the area in which the property is located. There are usually different types of area within each urban settlement/town/city, some costing far less than others, but usually with good reason, so do not be fooled by seemingly irresistible prices.
Concerning temporary accommodation such as hotels and resorts, there is a massive range available in South Africa, and even a simple internet search should give you several options. If you are planning on immigrating to the country, it may be to your advantage to avoid establishments aimed specifically at tourists, because they may cost more.
